Level Design

I wanted to create a level that is about a merchant shop. In the shop there would be display tables, shelves, storage boxes, barrels, and so on and so fort. I wanted it to set in a medieval fantasy world where the items that were displayed in the shop were unique and interesting items.

Here are some quick inspirations of what i would have liked to have for the shop to look like.

This is the type of style that i would have like to have for my level, which has a stylized look on its textures.
I also wanted to create it in low poly as i am still a beginner using Maya.

I wanted to use the unreal engine because i heard that it was a user friendly engine that is quick and easy to play around with and importing models would not be that hard. I have also worked with a previous unreal engine for school work so i might be still familiar with the controls.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale
Here is a game inspiration that i have played and looked upon. I like how the simplicity of the art style of this game and its game play.

Here are some quick concepts of how the merchant shop would look like from the outside, i tried to create a different and also interesting look to it.

I created a top down view of how my level would be laid out, keeping in mind on where props would fit in and if the player could also more around freely inside the shop. I decided to create two floors for this level, the ground floor is for where the items would be displayed and where the shop keeper would be at, also where the storage is would be.

The second floor is where the shop keepers living quarters would be set it, it has the kitchen with some supplies and his bedroom at the corner.

This is also another concept of how the layout would be for the level, but in this one only has a ground floor, as you can see both the living quarters and the shop displays are together.

Here are some item concepts for props that i have created which could be used to populate the level.

Here are some screen capture of the ground floor of the shop, this is a block out of the level, all the pieces wall and floor pieces are separate and modular.

Here are some screen capture of the first floor, this is where the living quarters are placed.

Ground floor, display area

There was not a whole lot of changes from the initial idea, from concept to block out. The only changes that i have conducted was the larger display area and also a wall between the kitchen room and the dining room on the first floor.

In game screenshots in Unreal Engine 4

Here is a video of the my Merchant Shop level

I like using the Unreal Engine and would like to keep working with the engine in future works.
